This page is an tribute to the Brisbane variety tv show Theatre Royal which was on BTQ 7 in Brisbane which commenced on February 7th 1961 and would last 7 years until 1968. The host was comedian George Wallace Jnr whose father was George Wallace snr and the other performers on the show were Eddie Edwards, Jackie Ellison, Brian Tait, Patti Allen, Delores Rose, Dick McCann, Rowena Wallace and many others. It was on Tuesday for a year at 9.30pm and from 1962 until the end Fridays at 7.30pm which was filmed live. The show won 8 Logies including 2 for George Wallace Jnr ,1 for Jackie Ellison and 6 for Most Popular Live show for Queensland and the TV series reproduced the stage of the real Theatre Royal which was on Elizabeth Street in Brisbane that closed 1959 with dancing girls, stage props, footlights and the camera shots over the heads of an darken audience to replicate the ambience of an bygone era. Theatre Royal was produced, directed and written by George wallace Jnr with Hal Croxon who directed and produced the show with Nat Kipner doing the writing credits. The show also had guest performers including the big names of Australian music as well as variety performers too and it came to an end in 1968 with the sad passing of George Wallace Jnr on September 30th aged 50 but there was an tribute show to him that was shown the following year. It's been 49 years since his passing but is still fondly remembered and I hope you will enjoy this page which I'm sure it will bring back memories for those who grew up in the era when this show was very popular.
Much appreciated this online record of the leading Brisbane comedy variety series of the sixties. George Wallace Jnr deserves much greater renown - he was a true comic and a master of ensemble comedy. I have always wondered what became of his great straight man Eddie Edwards, last seen on screen as host of a Saturday children’s show in the early seventies. I am unable to find any information about him. He was a great ‘feed’ who made the comic pairing with George Wallace one of the greatest double acts in Australian entertainment.
